This book is an in-depth exploration of the challenge of transforming violent conflict into just peace inside systems of oppression and external military occupation, with a focus on the conflict in Israel and its occupied territory. The book recognizes the official and unofficial invalidation of the 1993 Oslo Peace Accord (and subsequent associated peace negotiations), and begins to explore new territory that might see the end of vicious cycles of violence, war, and oppression, and where the multi-ethno-religious inhabitants of historic Palestine might realize positive peace and some sense of harmony. Methodologically, the work confronts and critically analyses power differentials, racism, and other dominations, and attempts to expose the forces that inhibit Palestinians from shaping the decisions that affect their lives. A central feature of this stance will be the clarification of a theoretical and practical framework of conflict transformation that is effective in contexts of asymmetrical conflict and military and political oppression and occupation. Such a framework will actively move beyond 'conflict resolution' frameworks which prioritize the de-escalation of conflict dynamics and the diffusion of crises, but instead centralizes on deeper issues and underlying patterns which, if addressed, allows a conflict to move far beyond temporary relief and towards wider sustainable change. As such, the conflict transformation framework developed in this book drills down to root causes and embraces the escalation of (non-violent) conflict. The end goal of conflict transformation is to transform people, their violent relationships, and the culture they exist in including oppressive and violent structures. To this end, this book focuses on the possibility of conflict transformation in a highly politicized context where official conflict resolution strategies have been exposed as wanting or as outright failures. Official conflict resolution processes (e.g. led by various U.S. envoys) and the associated externally funded civil society initiatives (e.g. dialogue initiatives; joint Jewish Israeli-Palestinian trainings and project work) are largely viewed as accompanied with a rapid expansion of Israeli settlements, and a general worsening of conditions on the ground for Palestinians living in Israel and in the occupied territory. This book will be of much interest to students of conflict resolution, peace studies, Middle Eastern Studies, the Arab-Israeli Conflict and IR in general.
